Matador football cruises past Everett |
YUMA, Ariz. Establish dominance early. The Arizona Western College defense suffocated the Everett Red Raiders on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium and only gave up one first down all game. Meanwhile, the offense ran the ball for 436 yards on 44 carries on the way to a 66-0 win. |
Both sides went three-and-out on their first possessions, but the 12th ranked Matadors only needed two plays to score on their second possession. Devonte Harley-Hampton raced in from 14 yards out to put the Matadors up 6-0 on his first touch from scrimmage. He led the Matadors with 139 rushing yards on the night. |
That touchdown was the first of five straight touchdowns for the offense. Chris Powell scored on a jet sweep from Alex Ogle for a 13-0 lead. Deonte Harley Hampton, Devontes twin brother, hit the afterburners and sprinted for a 49-yard score with 3:51 left in the first quarter. Running back Trey Rodriguez strolled in for an 18-yard touchdown on the second play of the second quarter to extend the lead to 26-0. He scored again on the next possession from 25 yards out for a 33-0 lead with 9:15 left in the first half. |
Meanwhile, the Matador defense only allowed Everett to gain positive yards on three plays in the first half. The Red Raiders finished the first half with negative 28 yards on offense. |
After halftime, the Matador offense scored on all five of its possessions. Wide receiver Steffon McKnight took a jet sweep to pay dirt from 10 yards out. Rodriguez notched his third and fourth touchdowns of the night to make it 54-0. Quarterback Emanuel Gant bulldozed his way into the end zone for a 10-yard score after keeping it on a zone read play. Finally, freshman running back Isaiah Townsend scored a six-yard touchdown on the final play of the game. |
