Paradise Valley men, Mesa women, top Region I scorers at NJCAA track and field championships

Region I captured two more individual national championships, bringing the total to three as the NJCAA Division I Track and Field Championships concluded Thursday.

  Paradise Valley's Jesse Avina won the men's javelin title with a toss of 195-6. For Central Arizona, Princess Kara captured the women's discus crown at 169-2. Wednesday, Mesa's Mary Siml took the 3,000 steeplechase.

  PVCC's Corde Long placed in three events, the most of any Region I athlete. He was second in the 110-meter hurdles, as well as second in the 400-meter hurdles and seventh in the 200-meter dash.

  In the team standings, Paradise Valley was the top among the men, placing tied for eighth scoring 36 points. Pima was tied 14th with 16 points, Mesa 16th with 15.83 and Central Arizona was tied for 27th with five points. 

  In the women's competition, Mesa placed seventh with 44 points, Central Arizona was eighth with 41 points and Pima 21st collecting eight points.
