Mesa fifth, Vakasioula tied for third, after first day of NJCAA women's golf championship

  Mesa sits in fifth place and the T-Birds' Alyzzah Vakasioula is tied for third, after the first day of play at the NJCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship Monday.

  MCC put together a 326 total and is just four shots behind third place which is a tie between Iowa Western and Western Texas.

  Vakasioula carded a 75 over the tough Mayfair C.C. course in Sanford, Fla., which yielded only one sub-par score. That was to Nagano Minori, of Seminole State, which is the team leader with a 296 total.

  Maria Harrouch, of Pima, is also in the thick of things, tied for fifth place at 76. She is playing as an independent, as is Kylie Rehberger, of South Mountain, who is tied for 49th place after shooting an 88.

  The tournament continues until Thursday.
