Ndiba powers Lady Matadors to 63-58 win over Roughriders

Prescott, Ariz., - The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (8-3, 4-0) battled back from a slow start to finish off a weekend sweep of Yavapai (1-6, 1-3) 63-58 on Saturday afternoon at Walraven Gymnasium.

Alliance Ndiba led the Lady Matadors in scoring with 22 points including 14 in the third quarter, to help the Lady Matadors hold off the Roughriders for their sixth consecutive win.

Yavapai opened the game on a 6-0 run before Arizona Western scored six of the next 10 points to cut the deficit to 10-8 on a Harris deep two before the end of the quarter. The Lady Matadors had to take an early timeout in the second quarter after Yavapai scored six of the first eight points of the second. Rita Gomes hit a pair of threes to bring the Lady Matadors within two points at 25-23 before Alliance Ndiba tied the score at 25-25 right before the buzzer.

The Lady Matadors opened the second half on a 6-0 run and then took a 35-27 lead on a Harris layup. Yavapai came storming back to tie the game at 39-39 before Gomes capped off a 9-3 run with a buzzer-beating three to put the Lady Matadors up 48-42 at the end of three. Arizona Western was able to fend off the Roughriders who tied the score with a minute to go, sealing the game from the free throw line.

Dyvine Harris scored 20 points, scoring 14 of her 20 points in the second half while Rita Gomes scored 11 points, hitting three, three-pointers.

The Lady Matadors are back in action on Wednesday, December 13, hosting Cochise in an ACCAC matchup at 5:30 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
