Arizona Western Baseball loses lead late in 3-2 loss to Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (6-2, 2-2) was held scoreless after the first inning and suffered a 3-2 loss to Eastern Arizona (7-5, 4-0) in its first road conference game of the season to open a three-game set on Friday afternoon.

Ismael Cordoba allowed one run on four hits in 5.2 innings while striking out three batters in a no-decision in the Matadors' loss.

Arizona Western scored first, taking the lead in the first inning when Bronson Neave singled and Nathan Houston scored when the ball was misplayed in left field to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Luis Angulo pushed the lead to 2-0 with a single to score Neave.

Eastern Arizona chipped away, scoring a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to tie the game at 1-1.

The Gila Monsters walked off winners with a single in the ninth to score their third and final run of the game.

Javier Diaz went 1-for-3 with two walks while Neave and Angulo went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

The Matadors and Gila Monsters play a doubleheader on Saturday, February 7, beginning at Noon in Thatcher, Ariz., at the EAC Baseball Field.
