DeCello smashes walk-off homer in Baseball's doubleheader split with Pima

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 13 ranked Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (15-5, 6-4) split a doubleheader with the No. 16 ranked Pima Aztecs (15-5, 3-3) on Tuesday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning game one 4-3 in eight innings before dropping game two 9-1.

Sergio DeCello hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning while Eli Watson went 3-for-4 as the Matadors pushed their winning streak to three games with a 4-3 win in extra innings in game one of the doubleheader.

Pima scored in the second inning before the Matadors answered in the bottom half, getting a run on a double play. After Pima scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to retake the lead at 3-1, the Matadors scored two in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Jahzeel Groetelaers and Robert Miranda to send the game to extra innings. DeCello gave the Matadors the win by leading off the eighth with a solo homer, his sixth of the season.

DeCello finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Luca Hoerger went 2-for-3. Mac Robertson worked a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win.

Nathan Houston led the Matadors in game two with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 and Eli Watson singled and scored in a 9-1 loss.

Pima scored a run in the second inning and added four more on a grand slam in the third inning. With the Matadors trailing 6-0 in the sixth inning, Eli Watson came around to score the Matadors' lone run after starting the inning with a single. Pima scored the final three runs as the Matadors settled for the split.

The Matadors are back home on Thursday, February 29, hosting Asian Breeze in a single game with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
