In a packed and rowdy Cahoon Armory Friday night, Bronco Volleyball swept Pima Community College to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

After a slight delay to gametime, the Broncos used the first few points of the match to find their rhythm. The set started with a back-and-forth between the two sides before Pima took a 6-5 lead.

Answering each other's points, both defenses held their own but outside hitter Allison Miller had other plans. Miller answered the call with a pair of back-to-back kills to swing the momentum in the Broncos favor, giving the home side the 15-14 advantage. Not looking back, NMMI closed the set on a 10-4 run taking the first set 25-18.

Early in set number two Pima took the driver seat and kept at least a point lead for the first 10 points of the set while the Broncos fought to stay in the game. After a massive kill by Sarah Schubert to knot the game at 12 a side, Schubert gave the Broncos the first lead of the set after another kill to send the crowd into a frenzy.

The Aztecs conducted a run of their own to give them a 20-16 lead. Scrapping for every ball, the Broncos fought back to tie the game at 21 with the help of another Miller kill.

"Even when we're down, our team this year just doesn't seem like they show a lot of pressure. We seem pretty calm and we know how to make a run and get back in it," head coach Shelby Forchtner said.

After a couple of ties, middle blocker Yuliana Favela gave NMMI the 24-23 lead before outside hitter Carola Schnidrig put an end to the set with a kill to give the Broncos the 26-24 victory.

To begin the third set, the Broncos looked like they were going to run away with the lead. That first lead came with the help of a kill by Schnidrig to give the home side a 4-3 advantage. A few points later, Daicy Benites Franco smashed a ball off a Pima College defender to grow the Bronco lead, making it a 7-4 game. Continuing the momentum, the Broncos took a 13-8 lead before Pima would claw back. The Aztecs fought their way back to a 19-19 tie, forcing a NMMI timeout where Forchtner had a few words with the squad. "I just wanted to stop giving them free points, and stop with our errors ... so we had to change the dynamic and bring energy," Forchtner said.

Coming on late for the Broncos, outside hitter Michelle Mlikan sparked the final run for the home side with a couple of kills to give NMMI the 24-21 lead. After a short rally, Dilean Bounds secured the sweep with a perfectly placed ball in the corner to give the Broncos the 25-22 game-winning set.

The Broncos return to action tomorrow morning with an 8 a.m. matchup with Tyler Junior College before ending the NMMI Classic with a 4 p.m. face off against Dodge City Community College in the Cahoon Armory Gym.
