Women's Basketball pulls away from Aztecs 62-43 to win 11th straight

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (13-3, 9-0) used a 16-0 first-quarter run to pull away from Pima (12-5, 7-3) 62-43 on Saturday afternoon at the House Gymnasium.

Alliance Ndiba scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Lady Matadors win their 11th consecutive game.

After Pima scored the first basket of the game, the Lady Matadors went on a 16-0 run highlighted by seven Dyvine Harris points to give the Lady Matadors a 16-2 lead. The Lady Matadors allowed just six first-quarter points, outscoring the Aztecs 20-6 in the first 10 minutes.

Pima opened the scoring in the second quarter but the Lady Matadors were able to push the lead to 27-7 on a Rita Gomes layup. After the Aztecs cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 31-17, Arizona Western closed the half on a 4-0 run, taking a 35-17 lead into the locker room on a Ndiba baseline jumper at the buzzer.

Pima outscored the Lady Matadors 16-9 in the 3rd quarter and cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 44-33 going into the fourth. After Pima closed to within nine points in the fourth, Arizona Western went on a 7-2 run to push the lead back into double-figures and outscored the Aztecs 18-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

Harris finished as the Lady Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 17 points while Alynna Palacios scored eight points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the win.

The Lady Matadors head out on the road on Friday, January 19, heading to the Thatcher to take on the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters at 5:30 pm.
