Volleyball finishes season sweep of Southern Nevada with 3-0 win

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Volleyball team (16-7, 8-3) finished off a weekend sweep of Southern Nevada (0-18, 0-11) with a 3-0 win in the final meeting between the two on Friday evening at the House Gymnasium.
Larrynn Joseph-Rodrigues led the Matadors for a second consecutive night, recording nine kills while both Esther Asiedu and Ma'o Lauhingoa chipped in with seven.
The Matadors came out strong in the opening set, winning six of the first seven points to take a 6-1 lead on back-to-back service aces from Gabriel Martensson. The lead would balloon to 16 points after a couple of Coyotes' service errors to give the Matadors a 19-3 lead. The Matadors put the first set away, winning 25-8.
After the Matadors scored the first two points of the second set, Southern Nevada went on a 3-0 run to take their first lead in a set. The Coyotes eventually opened an 8-5 lead before the Matadors went on a run to take a 15-11 lead. Arizona Western opened its largest lead of the set, ending the set at 25-15 after two consecutive kills from Joseph-Rodrigues.
Southern Nevada took an early lead in the third set, jumping out to a 4-2 lead. The Matadors battled back, taking a 7-5 lead on a Nehir Erimez kill and pushing the lead out to 9-5 forcing a Southern Nevada timeout. Sevval Aslan put the Matadors up 14-7 with a block as the Matadors rolled to a 25-10 win in the final set to take the match 3-0.
Joseph-Rodrigues also led the Matadors in digs with seven and Nehir Erimez had 23 assists in the Matadors' win.
The Matadors are back in action on Wednesday, October 30, hosting Central Arizona in the regular season finale with the first serve set for 7:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
