Men's Basketball uses big second-half run to pull away for 77-68 win over Cougars

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (15-7, 8-4) used a 13-0 second-half run to earn a 77-68 come-from-behind win over South Mountain (6-13, 1-10) on Tuesday evening in Phoenix.

AJ Marmolejos scored 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead five Matadors in double-figures to help Arizona Western snap a two-game losing skid.

The Matadors jumped out to a 16-10 lead early, but South Mountain closed the game with a 5-0 run. After Cam Atkinson stopped the run with a jumper, the Cougars went on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 22-18 lead. LaRoi Glover gave the Matadors the lead back with a putback but South Mountain beat the buzzer before half to take a 35-33 lead at the break.

South Mountain started the second half with a 10-3 run and built a 48-40 lead, its largest of the game. The Matadors scored the next 13 points, regaining the lead at 53-48. Edwin Suarez pushed the lead to nine points at 60-51 with a basket and a foul, converting the three-point play as the Matadors pulled away.

Matija Gledic was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while Atkinson finished the game with 13 points. Glover and Jannoy Thomas each finished with 12 points while Suarez had nine rebounds.

The Matadors return home on Friday, February 2, hosting Yavapai in the first of two games that weekend at the House Gymnasium at 7:30 pm.    Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
