Men's Basketball races past Pima 97-88 to win third in a row

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors Men's Basketball team (14-5, 7-2) had four players score in double-figures in its 97-88 win over Pima (14-3, 6-3) on Saturday evening at the House Gymnasium.

AJ Marmolejos led all scorers with 28 points and had eight assists to guide the Matadors to their third consecutive win.

Pima opened the scoring and took an early 3-0 lead before the Matadors used a run to open up a 10-7 advantage. After going back and forth, Marmolejos put the Matadors back in front 13-12 with a layup. Jannoy Thomas scored seven first-half points and hit a here-pointer to push the Matadors' lead to 35-23. Pima closed the first half on a run and trimmed the Matadors' lead to three points at 43-40 at the break.

Thomas hit an early second-half three and bumped the lead to 54-47. Pima grabbed the lead midway through the second half at 60-59 but the Matadors scored 10 of the next 12 points to open up a 69-62 edge. The Matadors led by two at 76-74 and closed the game on a 21-14 run to pull away for the win.

Cam Atkinson was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 21 points while Thomas ended the game with 19. LaRoi Glover was the fourth Matador in double-figures with 12.

The Matadors head out on the road on Friday, January 19, heading to the Thatcher to take on the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters at 7:30 pm.
