Barney and Vigil German power Arizona Western Softball to sweep of Yavapai

The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Softball team (27-15, 19-7) picked up a pair of one-run wins, sweeping Yavapai (11-20, 11-13) on Tuesday afternoon in Prescott, winning game one 12-11 in eight innings before coming from behind to win game two 7-6.

MacKenzie Barney smacked a three-run homer in the Lady Matadors' doubleheader opening 12-11 win in eight innings over the Roughriders.

Yavapai opened the scoring in the first inning, plating four runs to take a 4-0 lead before the Lady Matadors responded with a three-spot in the second inning, off the bat of Barney who pulled the Lady Matadors to within a run at 4-3 with a three-run homer.

The Roughriders pushed the lead back to three runs with two added runs in the bottom of the second. Arizona Western scored two runs in the fifth inning and added five runs in the sixth highlighted by a pair of two-run singles from GiGi Garcia and Summer Simpson.

After Yavapai scored two runs in both the sixth and the seventh innings to send the game to extras, where Madison Morgan plated two runs with a single. Yavapai scored one run in the eighth but the Lady Matadors held on for the win in the opener.

Valerie Joaquin collected three hits and Lili Vigil German crushed a three-run home, going 2-for-4 as the Lady Matadors scored seven runs in the seventh inning to beat Yavapai in game two.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Roughriders took a 1-0 lead before scoring five runs in the fifth to open the lead to six runs at 6-0.

The Lady Matadors batted 12 times in the seventh inning, scoring seven runs to grab the lead for good at 7-6. Mackenzie Vela opened the inning with a leadoff double as the Lady Matadors pounded out five hits in the inning. Vigil German provided the big swing, smashing a three-run homer in the inning.

Arizona Western is back on the road on Saturday, April 27, heading to Coolidge for an ACCAC doubleheader at Central Arizona beginning at Noon.
