Men's Basketball uses big second half to tame Coyotes 68-58

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (9-3, 2-0) outscored Chandler-Gilbert (7-1, 2-1) 48-34 in the second half to win its second conference game of the season 68-58 over the Coyotes on Wednesday night at the House Gymnasium.

AJ Marmolejos led all scorers with 27 points, 20 of which came in the second half, to help the Matadors come from behind to stay perfect at home.

Arizona Western was held to 20 points in the first half, scoring just nine points in the first 16 minutes. Arizona Western used a 7-0 run in the final three minutes to close to within four points at the break.

The Matadors kept the run going in the second half, scoring the first five points of the half to take their first lead since the opening minutes at 25-24. LJ Glover gave the Matadors a 35-33 lead with a put back dunk off a miss. The Matadors went on an 11-0 run, opening up a 48-37 lead on a Joao Das Chagas shot from in the lane. The Matadors outscored the Coyotes 48-34 to pull away for the win.

Jannoy Thomas finished the game as the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 12 points while Glover, along with Edwin Suarez, and Cam Atkinson each scored eight in the win.

The Matadors are back in action on Wednesday, December 13, hosting Cochise at 7:30 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
