Softball uses big inning to gain split with South Mountain

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors' Softball team (4-8, 0-0) split a non-conference doubleheader on the road, winning game one 7-6 before falling 8-0 in game two at South Mountain (2-1) on Saturday afternoon.  

The Lady Matadors scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to jump ahead of the Cougars and take the opening game of the doubleheader.

With the Lady Matadors trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Arizona Western sent nine batters to the plate and Veronica Eddy drove in a pair while two more Lady Matadors scored on errors. Vonyea Pina put the Lady Matadors in front with a sacrifice fly.

Kaity McLaughlin went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Jayleen Espinoza was 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Liliana Vigil German allowed just three earned runs in seven innings and struck out four in the win.

The Lady Matadors were held to just four hits in game two, falling 8-0 in five innings to settle for the split.

Espinoza added her third hit of the day while Valerie Joaquin, and Madison Morgan each singled in the loss.

The Matadors are back in action on Saturday, March 2, hosting South Mountain in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
