Arizona Western Baseball slugs past Eastern in game two to earn a doubleheader split

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (33-11, 20-10) split a doubleheader with Eastern Arizona (23-18, 15-17) on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, falling 8-5 in game one before beating the Gila Monsters 14-2 in seven innings in game two.

Robert Miranda drove in three of the Matadors' five runs in the 8-5 loss in the opener, going 1-for-3. Carl Sullivan Jr. finished the game 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Eastern Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the second inning but the Matadors matched that with a run of their own in the bottom half on a solo home run off the bat of Sergio DeCello.

The Gila Monsters took the lead back in the third inning and then scored six runs in the four to open an 8-1 lead.

Sullivan and Miranda each drove in a run in the fifth inning and Miranda pulled the Matadors to within three runs with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Bronson Neave went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while both Robert Miranda and Luca Hoerger drove in three runs in game two 14-2 win.

After Eastern Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Miranda knotted the score with a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning. Arizona Western added four more runs in the second inning before erupting for six runs in the fourth, busting out seven hits in the inning.

The Matadors added three more runs in the fifth, two of which came in to score on a Hoerger double and the Matadors took game two 14-2.

Mac Robertson allowed two runs over 5.2 innings of work to earn the win and Brady Nelson tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief.

Arizona Western heads to Coolidge on Tuesday, April 16, for an ACCAC doubleheader with Central Arizona beginning at 12:00 pm.
