Baseball hangs on to sweep Paradise Valley in return home

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 13 ranked Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (27-7, 14-6) held on to sweep a doubleheader with Paradise Valley (18-16, 8-12) on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning game one 7-0 before taking game two 10-8.

Ismael Cordoba threw seven shutout innings and struck out six batters while surrendering just four hits in the Matadors' game-one win.

Arizona Western opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single from Luca Hoerger and then batted 10 times in the second inning, scoring six runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Nathan Houston and a Bronson Neave RBI double to push the lead to 7-0.

Houston went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in while Neave finished the opener 2-for-3 with a double and run batted in. Hoeger also drove in two runs in the win, going 2-for-3.

Robert Miranda had four hits in game two, going 4-for-5 with an RBI while Fausto Sanchez smashed a grand slam in a 10-8 win over the Pumas.

Eli Watson put the Matadors in front with an RBI single in the first inning before the Matadors added two more runs in the second inning on a Carl Sullivan sacrifice fly and a Miranda RBI single. The Matadors erupted for five runs in the fifth inning highlighted by a Sanchez grand slam.

After the Pumas got on the board in the top of the sixth, the Matadors got a run back on a Sergio DeCello sacrifice fly.

Paradise Valley batted 11 times and scored five runs to cut the Matadors' lead to 9-8 in the eighth inning before the Matadors got a run as insurance in the eighth on a Watson RBI single.

Brady Nelson tossed five shutout innings and struck out a pair in the win.

The Matadors are back on the road on Tuesday, March 26, heading to Mesa to take on the Mesa Thunderbirds in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
