Hormigos scores twice in Matadors 4-0 win over Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 2 Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (6-0-2, 4-0-1) remained undefeated, scoring three second-half goals on its way to a 4-0 win over Eastern Arizona (3-3-2, 2-1-1) on Saturday night at Matador Soccer Field.

Alvaro Hormigos entered the game as a substitute in the first half and gave Arizona Western the lead in the 30th minute, beating the keeper with a shot from the top of the box to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

After the Matadors came close to doubling the lead in the second half, Hormigos added his second of the night, received a low cross from Erick Mejia at the back post, and struck a ball into the wide-open net to extend the Matadors' lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute. Brandon Mbo Izako made it a 3-0 game just three minutes later on another cross from Mejia.

Goalkeeper Esteban Gonzalez played 90 minutes and kept the Gila Monsters of the scoreboard to earn the clean sheet while scoring the Matadors' fourth goal with a penalty in the 83rd minute.

The Matadors head out on the road on Tuesday, September 19, heading to Phoenix to take on South Mountain at 1:00 p.m.
