Arizona Western Baseball finishes regular season with split at Cochise

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (37-15, 24-14) split a doubleheader to wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Cochise (34-22, 21-17) 4-2 in game one before winning game two, 8-6.

The Matadors opened the scoring in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first inning thanks to a Sergio DeCello ground out to put the Matadors in front 1-0.

After Cochise tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, the Apaches scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The Matadors cut the deficit to one run in the top of the fifth inning when Robert Miranda smacked a double to center, scoring the Matadors' second run of the game. Cochise added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and took the opener 4-2.

Arizona Western scored all eight of its runs in game two in the first four innings, opening the scoring once again in the first inning when Luca Hoerger doubled down the line, scoring DeCello, and giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

Just like in game one, the Apaches answered with a run in the bottom half of the first but the Matadors took the lead back in the second inning when Jahzeel Groetelaers laced a single to left to put the Matadors in front 2-1.

Cochise took the lead in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs but the Matadors matched that output in the third, scoring two runs on a double steal and a Bronson Neave single.

The Matadors scored four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Luca Hoerger. Cochise scored the final three runs of the game but the Matadors hung on for the 8-6 win.

Arizona Western will be the No. 3 seed in the Region I playoffs, heading to Tucson to take on the No. 2 seed Pima in the Region I Semifinals best-of-three series beginning on Thursday, May 2, at a time to be determined.
