Neave and Uribe guide Matadors to 14-5 win over Geckos

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (4-0) finished off a perfect opening weekend, beating GateWay (1-3) 14-5 thanks to a six-run seventh inning to pull away from the Geckos at Morse Stadium.

Bronson Neave led the Matadors by going 3-for-6 with four runs batted in and starting pitcher Carlos Uribe allowed just three runs in 4.2 innings while striking out six batters to help the Matadors extend their winning streak to four games.

After GateWay opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, the Matadors took the lead in the bottom half on a two-run single off the bat of Neave before Taehyung Kim added a third with a sacrifice fly.

The Matadors built up a 5-1 lead but the Geckos cut the advantage to two runs at 5-3 in the fifth inning. Arizona Western got those two runs back in the sixth inning scoring the sixth run on a Neave single and adding the seventh on a Marcus Graham bases-loaded walk.

Gateway grabbed another two runs in the top of the seventh before the Matadors sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame., highlighted by a two-run single from Carl Sullivan.

Eli Watson went 2-for-4 with a triple and two walks while Sergio DeCello had a pair of hits and reached base four times.
