Women's Soccer cruises in season-opening 17-0 win over Imperial Valley

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 5 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Soccer team (1-0) opened the 2024 season by scoring 17 goals in a 17-0 win over Imperial Valley on Friday night at Matador Soccer Field.

Yui Suetsugu scored four of the Matadors' 17 goals in her Arizona Western debut to pace the Matadors in the season-opening win.

The Matadors scored eight of their 17 goals in the first half to take an 8-0 lead before adding nine more in the final 45 minutes.

America Chavez, Linka Ono, and Dianna Taddei each had a brace, scoring two goals in the win. Yuma native Itzel Meza scored her first goal as a Matador and Naho Yamamura, Fernanda Quiroz, and Ana Velazquez also scored their first career goals.

Sophomores Mariany De Souza, Leigha Dobbins, and Jezmin Castellanos each added a goal.

Tindra Biederman and Iyan Hernandez combined for a clean sheet with Biedermann playing 60 of the 90 minutes in the win.

The Matadors are back in action on Sunday, September 1st, taking on Trinidad State in a neutral site game in Sierra Vista, Ariz. at 3:00 pm.
