Robertson's gem helps Arizona Western Baseball split with Geckos

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 12 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (32-8, 19-7) split a doubleheader with GateWay (15-25, 9-17) on Wednesday afternoon at Gene Autry Park in Mesa, losing game one 3-2 in extra innings before shutting out the Geckos in game two, winning 3-0.

Sanchez went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Taehyung Kim finished the opener 1-foe-2 with a walk in the extra innings loss to Geckos.

GateWay took an early lead in the third inning in game one before the Matadors knotted the score an inning later when Bronson Neave reached on an error that allowed Nathan Houston to score, tying the game 1-1.

Fausto Sanchez gave the Matadors the lead in the sixth inning, singling into left with two outs to put the Matadors in front 2-1.

GateWay tied the game up in the seventh inning to force extra innings and put the lead-off runner on third base in the ninth, scoring the winning run one batter later to win the game 3-2.

Matadors' starter Mac Robertson tossed seven shutout innings in game two, earning the complete game win to secure the split with a 3-0 win over the Geckos.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Robert Miranda tripled and came home to score on an Eli Watson single to put the Matadors in front 1-0. Neave added a second run in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly and the Matadors tacked on an insurance run on a GateWay error in the seventh inning.

Watson finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI while Sanchez walked three times in the win.

The Matadors are back in action on Tuesday, April 9, heading to Phoenix to take on South Mountain in an ACCAC doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for Noon.
