Das Chagas sinks late free throw to give Men's Basketball 77-76 win over Coyotes

YUMA, Ariz. – Joao Das Chagas hit a free throw with one second left to help Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (5-1) to a 77-76 win over College of Southern Nevada (0-7) on Saturday evening at the CSN Events Center in North Las Vegas.

Southern Nevada hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 76 with just seven seconds left before Das Chagas was fouled with one second remaining, splitting a pair of free throws to give the Matadors the one-point victory.

The Matadors used a 42-point second half to build a 12-point halftime lead before the Coyotes mounted a comeback in the second half, outscoring the Matadors 46-35.

AJ Marmolejos finished as the Matadors; leading scorer, scoring a game-high 24 points while Edwin Suarez finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing a game-best 20 rebounds in the win.

Das Chagas, Jannoy Thomas, and Cam Atkinson each scored nine points in the win with Atkinson leading the team with three three-pointers.

The Matadors return home on Friday, November 24, for a rematch with College of Southern Nevada on the first day of the Chapman Automotive Thanksgiving Classic at 7:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
