Ndiba powers Lady Matadors to 56-55 win over Central Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (15-5, 11-2) held on for a 56-55 win over Central Arizona (6-12, 5-7) to win its second straight game on Friday evening at the House Gymnasium.

Alliance Ndiba scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while Davielis Berroa scored 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds in the win over the Vaqueras.

Central Arizona used an early 5-0 run to take a 5-2 before the Lady Matadors scored seven of the next nine points to grab the lead back and went up 16-10 on a Ndiba putback. Central Arizona scored just before the buzzer, cutting the Lady Matadors' lead to 16-13.

Fatima Katembo put the Lady Matadors up seven at 25-17 with a bucket and back-to-back triples from Berroa and Rita Gomes jumped the Lady Matadors' lead to 32-21 before going into the break leading 32-23.

Central Arizona went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter to trim the Lady Matadors' lead to 36-32 and cut it to three points at 38-35 but Arizona Western used a small run to take a 43-39 lead into the fourth quarter. With the Lady Matadors leading 46-44, Ndiba started a run with a basket and the foul and the Lady Matadors built a six-point lead. After the Vaqueras came to within a point, Dyvin Harris was able to seal the game at the free throw line to put the game away.

Alynna Palacio ended the night as the Lady Matadors' third-leading scorer, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds in the win.

The Lady Matadors are back in action Saturday, January 27, hosting the Central Arizona Vaqueras once again at 2:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
