Aztecs Softball falls in doubleheader at Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College softball team (35-12, 22-6 in ACCAC) struggled on the road for the second straight ACCAC doubleheader as it fell at Eastern Arizona College (32-8, 27-3).
The Aztecs got shut out in the first game and the rally fell short in the second game. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) extended her hitting streak to 23 games as she went 3 for 6 on the day. Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) closed out her day 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

  • Game 1: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 8, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (6 innings): The Aztecs left eight runners stranded on base as the Gila Monsters scored three runs in the 6th inning to end the game on a run-rule.
    The Aztecs left two runners on base in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings.
    Zepeda finished the game going 1 for 3. Sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) was 1 for 1 with a walk while Rivera went 1 for 2. Freshmen Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) and Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) each were 1 for 3.
    Freshman Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) took the loss as she pitched two innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

  • Game 2: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Aztecs battled back to tie the game but couldn't overtake the lead.
    Down 5-0 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs scored three runs as Rivera and Marx hit RBI singles. Sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a lead-off triple and scored on an error to put the Aztecs on the board. The Gila Monsters tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning as Pima trailed 6-3.
    The Aztecs came back with another three runs in the 5th. Freshman Alyssa Lopez (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI single to score pinch runner Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) while Chacon scored on an error on the same play. Rivera followed with an RBI double bringing in Lopez to tie the game at 6-6.
    Eastern Arizona took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the 5th. The Aztecs stranded two runners on base in the 6th and one in the 7th.
    Lopez finished the game 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Rivera went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Chacon was 1 for 4 with two runs and Marx finished 1 for 4 with an RBI. Zepeda closed out the game going 2 for 3.
    Freshman Ailani Rodriguez (Rio Rico HS) took the loss as she pitched two and one-third innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
