Arizona Western Softball swept by Gila Monsters

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors Softball team (10-10, 4-2) dropped a pair of games on the road, falling in both games of an ACCAC doubleheader to Eastern Arizona (13-5, 8-0) on Tuesday afternoon in Thatcher, Ariz., losing game one 16-1 before falling in game two 15-6.

Mollie Forbes and Madison Morgan each doubled in the Lady Matadors' game-one loss to the Gila Monsters.

Eastern Arizona scored nine runs in the second inning and added seven more in the fourth inning to jump out to a 16-0 lead.

Madison Morgan got the Lady Matadors on the board in the fifth inning, driving in a run to cut the deficit to 16-1.

Jayleen Espinoza and Ariana Montiel each had a pair of hits in game two as the Lady Matadors opened an early lead but were unable to hold it in a 15-6 loss in six innings.

Morgan gave the Lady Matadors a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single before Montiel added a second with a single of her own. Vonyea Pina reached on a fielder's choice that pushed the lead to 3-0.

Eastern cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 3-2 with two runs in the first before the Lady Matadors added a fourth run in the third inning on a Montiel sacrifice fly.

Eastern Arizona scored three runs in the third inning and four in the fourth before Montiel drove in the Lady Matadors' sixth run of the game with a single in the fifth inning.

The Gila Monsters scored the final six runs in the game in the final two innings.

Arizona Western heads to Tucson on Thursday, March 14, for a non-conference doubleheader with Dawson at the Tucson Invitational Games at 1:30 pm.
