Matadors' bats awaken in game two to earn split with Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (35-13, 22-12) played its final regular season home series, splitting a doubleheader with Yavapai (14-36, 8-26), losing game one 7-0 before taking the second game 14-2 on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

The Matadors were held to four hits in the opener of the doubleheader, falling 7-0 to Yavapai.

The Roughriders opened the scoring in the third inning, scoring three runs on a pair of hits and an error. Yavapai scored the first run on a double and scored two runs on a wild pitch and an error on the throw back to home plate.

Yavapai sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the fifth inning to open the lead up 7-0. Eli Watson, Bronson Neave, Luca Hoerger all singled in the loss while Jonah Richardson tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

Taehyung Kim had three hits, driving in two runs, and Sergio DeCello went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to help the Matadors cruise to a 14-2 win in game two.

After Yavapai opened the scoring with a two-out run in the first inning, the Matadors batted 12 times in the bottom of the first inning and scored eight runs, six of which came home to score before the first out of the inning was recorded. After Robert Miranda and Watson reached on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. The Matadors scored their first run on a Nathan Houston single as the Matadors put together four consecutive hits, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Neave.

Miranda added to the Matadors' lead in the third inning, launching a two-run homer to left, his seventh home run of the season, pushing the Matadors' advantage to 10-1.

Carl Sullivan drove in the Matadors' 11th run with a sacrifice fly before Luca Hoerger scored on a wild pitch to cap off a two-run fourth inning. After a Yavapai solo home run in the fifth, Taehyung Kim got the run back with an RBI single and Sullivan knocked in another run with a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 14-2.

Mac Robertson allowed two runs over 5.2 innings of work, striking out four batters while Brady Nelson worked a scoreless inning in relief.  

The Matadors head back on the road on Tuesday, April 23, heading to Tucson for an ACCAC doubleheader with Pima beginning at Noon.
