Baseball opens home schedule with 9-8 win over Northeastern in extras

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (5-0) extended its season-opening winning streak to five games with a 9-8 win over Northeastern (3-2) in extra innings on Friday afternoon in the home opener at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

Marcus Graham gave the Matadors the win with a single into right field in the 10th inning to keep the Matadors' perfect start to the season intact.

Lucas Hoerger led the Matadors by going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in while Sergio DeCello hit his second home run of the season and finished the game 2-for-6 with two runs knocked in.  

 The Matadors opened the scoring in the first inning when Bronson Neave drove in Robert Miranda with a sacrifice fly to give the Matadors a 1-0 advantage. With the game tied at 1-1 in the second, Hoerger smacked a homer to left to put the Matadors back in front.

Northeastern sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored four runs to grab a 5-2 lead. The Matadors responded, batting 10 times in the fifth and scoring four runs to take a 6-5 edge and added to that in the sixth with two more runs.

The Plainsmen scored the next three runs of the game and sent the game to extra innings with a run in the ninth inning.

Yoni Castro threw 3.1 innings and struck out six batters while allowing three runs in a no-decision out of the bullpen and Jonah Richardson picked up the win with a scoreless 10th inning of work.

The Matadors are back in action on Saturday, hosting Northeastern in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
