Marmolejos has career night in Matadors' 87-76 win over Phoenix

The Arizona Western Matadors Men Basketball team (8-1, 1-0) got a career night from AJ Marmolejos in an 87-76 win over Phoenix (0-7, 0-2) to open ACCAC play on Tuesday night at the Bear's Den.

Marmolejos scored a career-high 34 points, setting a career-high in made three-pointers with seven, hitting five of them in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Arizona Western got off to a quick start scoring 21 of the first 30 points and took a 49-43 lead into the locker room for halftime in large part to Marmolejos scoring 19 of his 34 points in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Phoenix made a run in the second half at home point cutting the Matadors' lead to one point before the Matadors were able to fend off the Bears, outscoring Phoenix 39-33 to push their winning streak to four games.

Jannoy Thomas finished the game as the Matadors' second-leading scorer with 14 points while Joao Das Chagas added 11 and Edwin Suarez chipped in with 10.

The Matadors remain on the road as they head to Ephraim, Utah to take on Utah State-Eastern on Thursday, November 30 at 5:00 pm.
