SMCC Men's Soccer Falls 5-3 to Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College men's soccer team (2-7-1, 2-7-1 ACCAC) lost 5-3 to No. 20 Glendale CC in an ACCAC match at the SMCC Soccer Field on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest through goals from Oscar Jimenez and Jhoan Soto, but the Gauchos fought back with four goals in the second half to post the victory. 

SMCC looked sharp early as freshman Aaron Vazquez forced an early save from the GCC goalkeeper. On the next surge up the field, the Cougars played a cross into the area that the GCC goalkeeper dropped, and Jimenez was there to pounce on the rebound, dribble around the scrambling goalie, and deposit the ball into the netting in the ninth minute. The goal was his third of the season. 

In the 15th minute, SMCC doubled its advantage as Jimenez and Soto played a give-and-go that put Soto in front of the net. He buried his shot inside the right post for his fifth goal of the season. Jimenez picked up his third assist of the year on the play. 

GCC cut the lead in half with a goal in the 24th minute following a scrum after a corner kick. However, the Cougars held out for the remainder of the half to lead 2-1 at the break. 

The Gauchos did not need much time to tie the contest, scoring in the 50th minute. They took the lead in the 65th minute, and a penalty kick increased their lead to 4-2 in the 70th minute. They added their fifth goal less than 90 seconds after their fourth. 

SMCC got one back in the 74th minute when Soto headed home a corner kick from sophomore Kevin Urias. Soto now has a team-high six goals and 15 points in the season, and Urias recorded his second assist of the year. 

Freshman Manuel Lopez made nine saves in roughly 77 minutes of work, including six stops in 31 minutes in the second half. Freshman Oswaldo Rodriguez played the final 13 minutes for SMCC and made three stops. 

GCC out-shot SMCC 24-13 for the match and had nine corner kicks to two for the Cougars. The teams combined for 29 fouls and five yellow cards. Mauricio FuentesJose Diaz, and Vazquez went into the book with cautions.
