Women's Soccer earns second ever trip to nationals with 2-0 win over Salt Lake

YUMA, Ariz. – For the second time in program history the No. 10 ranked Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Soccer team (15-1-0) punched its ticket to the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 win over No. 4 ranked Salt Lake (14-1-2) to win the West District title.

Arizona Western took control of the game early, owning the possession in the first half before the Lady Matadors opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Yuna Aoki took a feed from Ashly Martinez and beat the keeper from just outside the box to give the Lady Matadors a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Matadors continued to pressure the Salt Lake backline and added the second goal just before halftime when Cianna Thomas tapped in a cross from Abigail Nkrumah, pushing the Lady Matadors' lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute.

Salt Lake saw more possession in the second half but were denied a goal thanks to Lady Matadors' goalkeeper Tindra Biedermann who stopped all five shots on target from the Bruins to earn the clean sheet.

Arizona Western qualifies for the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship in Wichita, Kan., for the second time in program history and the first time since the 2018 season.
