Baseball rallies to complete doubleheader sweep of Northeastern

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (7-0) swept a doubleheader with Northeastern (2-6), winning game one 6-2 before coming from behind to win the second game 6-5 in extra innings at Walt Kammann Baseball Field. 

Sergio DeCello led the Matadors with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch while Jonah Richardson tossed three scoreless innings in relief to hold the Matadors take the opener over Northeastern 6-2.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the first inning on a DeCello single and added two more in the second inning on a Robert Miranda groundout and an Eli Watson base hit.

After the Matadors pushed the lead to 4-0 on a Taehyung Kim single, Northeastern cut the lead in half with two runs in the fourth. Arizona Western got those two runs back, adding the fifth on a Bronson Neave single in the fourth and another on a Carl Sullivan single in the fifth, pulling away for the 6-2 win.

Ismael Cordoba struck out five batters in the start for the Matadors while Richardson allowed just two base runners in the final three innings.

The Matadors watched an early lead slip away in game two before scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to sweep the doubleheader with a 6-5 win.

The Matadors jumped out to a 3-0 lead early before Northeastern hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game and then added a fourth run in the inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Matadors sent the game to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh and after the Plainsmen regained the lead in the top of the eighth the Matadors picked up the win in the bottom half, scoring a pair of runs and winning the game on a bases loaded walk.

DeCello went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Mac Robertson tossed six scoreless innings and struck out seven in a no-decision.

The Matadors are back in action on Sunday, February 4, hosting Northeastern in the series finale at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
