Arizona Western Softball scores 48 runs in sweep of GateWay

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (19-11, 11-3) scored 48 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the GateWay Geckos (8-15, 5-10) on Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix, winning game one 23-1 in five innings before taking the second game 25-8.

Jessie Garcia, Mollie Forbes, GiGi Garcia, and MacKenzie Barney all homered in the Lady Matadors' 23-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader. Valeri Joaquin and Kaity McLaughlin each had three hits while Forbes finished the game 4-for-5 with two homers and seven runs batted in.

The Lady Matadors opened the scoring in the first inning before erupting for six runs in the second to take a 7-0 lead highlighted by a GiGi Garcia two-run homer. The Lady Matadors added nine more runs in the third and three more in the fourth before capping off the scoring with a four-run fifth inning.

Joaquin, Mackenzie Vela, and Jessie Garcia each had four-hit games while Garcia and Barney each homered in the win.

The Matadors put together a pair of 11-run innings, starting in the first inning, sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring the game's first 11 runs highlighted by two-run singles from Garcia and Barney and a two-run double from Vela.

After adding another run in the second on a Barney solo homerun, the Lady Matadors batted 16 times in the third inning, scoring 11 more runs in an inning that included a two-run homer off the bat of Jessie Garcia. Arizona Western scored its final two runs of the game in the fifth inning.

GateWay scored two runs in the second inning and three more in the third before capping off its scoring with three more runs in the fourth.

The Lady Matadors head to Mesa on Saturday, March 30, to take on the Mesa Thunderbirds in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
