Espinoza collects three sweeps in Softball's two losses at Phoenix

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (3-7, 0-2) dropped both games of its ACCAC opening doubleheader with Phoenix (5-2, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon, losing game one 11-3 in five innings before falling 8-0 in five innings in game two in Phoenix.  

Jayleen Espinoza and GiGi Garcia were responsible for the two RBIs the Lady Matadors produced in the game one loss.

Phoenix scored seven runs in the first inning and added two more in the second before the Lady Matadors scored a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. 

Phoenix matched the Lady Matadors' two runs in the fifth to close out the game. Summer Simpson struck out four batters in four innings of relief work.

Espinoza led the Lady Matadors with two hits in an 8-0 game two loss, going 2-for-3 with two doubles while Ariana Montiel also doubled in the loss.

The Bears scored two runs in the first and added four more in the second before finishing off the scoring with two runs in the third.

GiGi Garcia picked up the fourth Lady Matadors' hit and went 1-for-2 in the loss.

The Lady Matadors are back in action on Saturday, February 24, heading back to Phoenix for a doubleheader with South Mountain at Noon.
