Women's Soccer battles back to beat Navarro in penalties

WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 6 seeded Arizona Western Lady Matadors scored a goal in the 87th minute to force overtime before beating Navarro 5-4 in penalty kicks in pool play at the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championships on Monday evening.

Arizona Western came close to opening the scoring on two occasions, hitting the bar twice on shots from outside the box as the game remained scoreless until the Navarro Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 82nd minute, taking the lead on a shot from the edge of the box.

The Lady Matadors grabbed the equalizer in the 87th minute when Yuna Aoki smashed a free kick into the upper corner at the back post to level the score at 1-1.

After 20 minutes of overtime, the game went to penalty kicks where the Lady Matadors missed their first two shots but would convert on the next five attempts while Navarro put its final shot over the bar, securing the win for the Lady Matadors.

The win is the first win at the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championships in program history for the Arizona Western Lady Matadors.

The Lady Matadors are back in action in pool play on Tuesday, November 14, taking on No. 3-seed Monroe at 2:00 pm MST at Stryker Complex.
