Men's Basketball wins second straight, beating Yavapai 81-71

PRESCOTT, Ariz., The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (10-3, 3-0) won its second consecutive game, going on the road and beating Yavapai (7-6, 1-2) 81-71 on Friday night at Walraven Gymnasium.

AJ Marmolejos led the Matadors in scoring with 22 points, with 13 coming in the second half and Cam Atkinson finished the game as the team's second-leading scorer with 20 points in the win.

Arizona Western scored eight of the first 10 points to jump out a 10-2 lead before Yavapai cut the Matadors' lead to 10-9 thanks to a 7-2 run which was answered by a Matadors' 7-0 run to jump back up eight at 21-13. The Matadors stretched the run to 10-0 on a Marmolejos fast break bucket. The Matadors took a 45-31.

Yavapai trimmed the Matadors' lead down to 10 points at 55-45 in the second half but the Matadors stretched the lead back to 15 with a 5-0 run. After Yavapai once again cut the lead to 10, Marmolejos leaked out for the layup to push the score to 62-50. Arizona Western was able to fend off the Roughriders, winning their second straight game 81-71.

LaRoi Glover was the third Matador to score in double-figures, scoring 12 points while Edwin Suarez added 10.

The Matadors are back in action against Yavapai on Saturday, December 9, at 4:00 pm at Walraven Gymnasium for the second of four regular-season meetings.
