Gomes' late three propels Lady Matadors 51-49 win over Cochise

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (19-6, 15-3) came from behind to beat Cochise (17-6, 12-4) 51-49 thanks to a Rita Gomes three-pointer in four-second left in the game on Saturday afternoon at Apache Stronghold Gymnasium.

Gomes scored 12 points in the win with eight of the 12 coming in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Matadors earn the weekend split with the Apaches.

The Lady Matadors scored just four points in the first quarter, being outscored 10-4 after going 2-for-13 from the field before outscoring the Apaches 10-9 to trim the Apaches' lead to 19-14 at the end of the first half.

Arizona Western had its best offensive quarter in the third, scoring 23 points and outscoring the Apaches 23-17, taking a 37036 lead thanks to an Alynna Palacios three-pointer at the buzzer to end the quarter. The Matadors trailed 49-38 with 14 seconds to play before taking the lead 10 seconds later on the three from Gomes.

Dyvine Harris led the Lady Matadors with 15 points and Alliance Ndiba scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the win.

The Lady Matadors return home on Friday, February 23, hosting Eastern Arizona in an ACCAC matchup at 5:30 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
