
SMCC Softball Powers Past Glendale CC in ACCAC Doubleheader

The South Mountain Community College softball team (18-12, 11-7 ACCAC) defeated Glendale CC 13-5 and 18-2 (5 innings) in an ACCAC road doubleheader at GCC on Mar. 18. Freshman Alyssa Jemio tossed a complete in the circle and went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and seven RBIs in the game-one victory. In game two, sophomores Nadia Rascon and Jessica Wallace hit home runs and sophomore Jada Montoya smacked two triples in the run-rule win.
Game One Recap
Tied at 1-1 after two innings, SMCC exploded for multiple runs in each of the next five frames en route to a 13-5 victory.
Jemio had an RBI single in the first, a two-run home run in the third, a two-run single in the fourth, and a two-run double in the fifth to record a career-high seven RBIs.
Rascon also had four hits in the victory, finishing a perfect 4 for 4 with three runs, an RBI, a double, and a triple. Sophomore Dionna Leanio went 3 for 4 with four runs, two walks, and a stolen base.
Sophomore Sadie Su'a and Montoya added doubles, with Su'a going 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI and Montoya scoring once and driving in one. Sophomore Sabrina Erran, freshman Eva Harrison, and sophomore Elise Saucedo added stolen bases.
Jemio (4-3) tossed seven innings to earn the win in the circle. She worked around eight hits, four earned runs, and four walks while striking out a career-high four batters.
Game Two Recap
The Cougars cranked out 17 hits over five innings to post the 18-2 victory and sweep the twin bill. SMCC scored at least one run in every frame, highlighted by a seven-run second and a five-run fifth.
Montoya and Rascon led the charge with three hits apiece. Rascon went 3 for 5 with three runs, three RBIs, and a two-run home run in the fourth, while Montoya was a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs, two RBIs, two triples, a stolen base, and a sacrifice bunt.
Wallace hit a three-run home run in the top of the second, and Leanio went 2 for 3 with three runs, two RBIs, and a sacrifice fly.
Jemio and Su'a also had two hits apiece in the victory. Jemio was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a walk, and a double, while Su'a went 2 for 5 with a run.
Saucedo added a double and a run, freshman Zaybri Franz hit a two-run single, and Harrison, freshman Jerzey Jarvis, and sophomore Jasmyne Campos had stolen bases.
Su'a (5-2) earned her fifth win of the season in the circle with four innings of work. She struck out six and worked around two unearned runs, five hits, and four walks. Freshman Rebekah Mendoza tossed an inning of relief with a strikeout.
