Bears Softball Shines Bright: Dominant Performances and Sophomore Day Celebrations

In Week 9 of the NJCAA Division II Softball Rankings, the Phoenix College Bears claimed the 10th spot, showcasing their prowess with a season record of 33-8, including an impressive 26-4 record in conference play. Last week, they secured a commendable 5-1 record, with their only loss coming against Chandler-Gilbert.

The Bears celebrated Sophomore Day in style, sweeping Scottsdale in a thrilling doubleheader. In the first game, they dominated with an 11-2 victory, led by standout performances from Cheyenne Ben, who recorded 2 RBIs, and Danitza Hernandez, who crushed 2 home runs and drove in an impressive 6 runs. Sydney Haake delivered a stellar pitching performance, striking out 10 batters over 5 innings.

In the second game, the Bears continued their dominance with a resounding 16-1 win. Riley Martens stole the show with a remarkable 8 RBIs, while Danitza Hernandez and Mackenzie Phillips also made significant offensive contributions. Alyssa Tinnin delivered a strong pitching performance, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 7 batters over 5 innings.

The Bears honored 10 sophomores for their contributions to the team: Sydney Haake, Asia Jones, Danitza Hernandez, Riley Martens, Alexis Ayersman, Brooklyn Gainey, Madison Garcia, Cheyenne Ben, Alyssa Tinnin, and Mackenzie Manygoats. With the regular season coming to a close, the Bears are poised to make a strong postseason push.
