Softball wraps up weekend with a split in Vegas

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (1-4) finished off the weekend at the Coyote Kickoff Classic by splitting a pair of games, earning its first win of the season with a 15-7 win over Trinidad State before falling 14-6 to the hosts College of Southern Nevada.

Jayleen Espinoza led the Lady Matadors in the game-one win, going 4-for-4 with two runs batted in.

The Lady Matadors opened the day by sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring five runs highlighted by an Espinoza two-run double. The Trojans took the lead thanks to a four-run second inning which followed a three-run first frame.

Arizona Western responded with three in its half of the second inning and scored two more in the third before breaking the game open with six runs in the fourth. Gianna Medrano also drove in two runs in the win.

Espinoza and Medrano led the Lady Matadors in their game two loss to Southern Nevada with Espinoza going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in and Medrano going 2-for-3 with two runs knocked in.

The Lady Matadors jumped on the board first in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on an Espinoza triple. After Southern Nevada tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, the Coyotes grabbed the lead with a four-run second.

MacKenzie Vela and Espinoza brought the Lady Matadors back to within a run by each driving in a run in the third inning but Southern Nevada went on to score eight more runs in the final three innings to pull away.

The Lady Matadors were held to four hits in the final game of the day in an 11-0 loss to Utah State Eastern in five innings. The Golden Eagles used a six-run fourth inning to break the game open while the Lady Matadors were led by Espinoza and MacKenzie Vlea who each doubled in the loss.

The Lady Matadors return home to open the Great Western Shootout on Thursday, February 1, hosting El Paso at 3:00 pm at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex.
