Saladin's two goals guides Matadors to 2-1 win over Pima

TUCSON, Ariz., - The No. 1 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (10-0-3, 7-0-2) got an 83rd-minute goal from Stephen Saladin to secure a 2-1 win over the No. 2 ranked DII Pima Aztecs (10-2, 7-2) on Tuesday night at Aztec Field.

After Pima dominated possession for the first 10 minutes, the Matadors put pressure on Pima's backline in the 24th minute, causing a poor pass that left the Pima keeper out of position, allowing Saladin to chip in a ball into the wide-open net from 30 yards out, giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

Pima came out of the locker room for the second half providing more pressure in the Matadors' half before breaking through in the 52nd minute, tying the game at 1-1.

The Matadors grabbed the lead for good in the 83rd minute scoring their second goal of the game off a Saladin chip over the oncoming keeper on the counterattack, putting the Matadors in front 2-1.

The Matadors return home on Saturday, October 14, hosting GateWay in an ACCAC matchup at 7:00 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
