Softball wraps up Great Western Shootout with 6-4 win over No. 12 Salt Lake

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (3-5) won their second consecutive game, holding on to beat Salt Lake (8-3) 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex.

Jayleen Espinoza went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, reaching base three times in the Lady Matadors' win.

Both teams traded scoreless frames until the fourth when the Lady Matadors batted nine times, scoring five runs to grab a 4-0 lead. With the Lady Matadors leading 1-0, GiGi Garcia drove in the second run of the game with a single before MacKenzie Vela made it a 3-0 lead with an RBI double. Valerie Joaquin gave the Lady Matadors a 5-0 advantage with a two-run single.

Salt Lake scored one run in the fourth inning before crawling to within a run in the fifth, scoring three runs.

The Lady Matadors picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning when Vela scored a run on an error, bumping the lead to 6-4.

The Lady Matadors are back in action on Saturday, February 17, heading to Phoenix to open ACCAC play against the Bears in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
