Women's Soccer fends off Yavapai to win eight straight

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 9 ranked Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Soccer team (9-1, 8-0) extended its winning streak to eight games, beating Yavapai (8-5-1, 6-2-1) 4-2 on Tuesday night in Prescott, Ariz., to remain unbeaten in ACCAC play.

Arizona Western struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute thanks to Wendy Jimenez who snuck a ball just under the bar on a free kick from 30 yards out to give the Lady Matadors the advantage. Mariany de Souza added to the lead 30 seconds later, beating the keeper with an arching ball from outside the box to push the lead to 2-0.

Yavapai cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 2-1 with a goal before the break but Arizona Western bumped the lead back to two goals thanks to Abigail Nkrumah who beat the keeper with a header at the near post off a cross, extending the Arizona Western lead to 3-1.

Yavapai once again cut the Lady Matadors' lead to one goal in the 68th minute but the Lady Matadors added their fourth goal with just four minutes remaining when Loegan Alia scored on a long run to up the advantage to 4-2.

The Lady Matadors return home on Saturday, October 7, hosting Scottsdale at 4:30 pm, at Matador Soccer Field. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
