SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Gateway CC

The South Mountain Community College (4-4) swept an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader against Gateway Community College, defeating the Geckos 18-8 (five innings) and 8-7 on Feb. 15. Ali Ashner had an outstanding day at the plate for the Cougars, finishing 5 for 6 with five RBIs, four runs and three stolen bases over the two games.

The Cougars scored multiple runs in every inning and finished with 19 hits and 11 stolen bases in the game one victory.

After Gateway struck for five runs in the top of the first, SMCC immediately answered with five runs of their own. The Cougars then scored two runs in the second, six in the third and five in the fourth to secure the run-rule victory.

Ashner was 3 for 3 with three runs, three RBIs, a double, a triple and two stolen bases. Destiny Apodaca went 3 for 4 with three runs, two RBIs, a double and two stolen bases.

Jeweliana Navarro, Elisabeth Raby, Nekysha Nakai and Adrianaly Morales all had two hits in the win. Raby added five RBIs and two triples, while Morales was the third Cougar to record two stolen bases.

In the circle, Julia Ruble (1-1) picked up the win. She tossed all five innings and allowed 11 hits and six earned runs to go with three strikeouts.

Game two was a much tighter affair, but SMCC prevailed in the end to sweep the doubleheader.

The Geckos jumped out to a 7-2 lead after scoring six runs in the top of the fourth. Undeterred, the Cougars responded with two runs in the fourth and added four in the bottom of the sixth to claim the one-run victory.

Ashner finished 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and a stolen base. Vanessa Gutierrez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Alexa Key had two hits and a run scored. Marissa Grijalval added two RBIs, and Apodaca and Morales each had two stolen bases in the win.

Gutierrez recorded the win for SMCC, tossing 3.1 innings of relief work. She had five strikeouts and allowed two hits. Christian Smith started the game for the Cougars. She threw the first 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs to go with two K's.
