Women's Basketball gets defensive in 51-44 win over Scottsdale

YUMA, Ariz., - The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (12-3, 8-0) pushed its winning streak to 10 games with a 51-44 win over Scottsdale (7-4, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon at the House Gymnasium.

Alynna Palacios led all scorers with 15 points while grabbing 15 rebounds while Dyvine Harris added 12 in the Lady Matadors' win.

Palacios scored the Lady Matadors' first four points to help the Lady Matadors jump out to a 7-0 lead with Rita Gomes capping off the run with a three-pointer. Arizona Western held Scottsdale to just two points in the first quarter, outscoring the Fighting Artichokes 10-2 in the first 10 minutes.

The Lady Matadors opened their largest lead of the first half in the second quarter, taking a 21-10 lead on a Davielis Berroa jumper. Scottsdale went on a 3-0 run to cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 21-13 before the Lady Matadors bumped the lead back to 10 points at 23-13 on a Palacios baseline jumper before the half.

Scottsdale came out of the locker room and opened the second half on a 6-0 to cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 23-19. The Lady Matadors raced back out to a 10-point lead thanks to aa Harris three and then took a 41-29 lead into the fourth quarter on a steal and score by Gomes.

After Arizona Western jumped out to a 14-point lead at 43-27, Scottsdale went on a 7-0 run to cut the Lady Matadors' lead to 43-36.

Gomes hit a pair of three-pointers and added eight points off the bench as the Lady Matadors held the opposition to under 50 points for the third consecutive game.

The Lady Matadors are back in action on Saturday, January 13, hosting Pima in an ACCAC matchup at 2:00 pm at the House Gymnasium.
