YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Volleyball team (7-4) wrapped up play in the Dalton Overstreet Invitational with two more wins on Saturday afternoon at Walraven Gymnasium in Prescott, Ariz., beating Mesa 3-1 before taking down Chandler-Gilbert 3-0.
The Matadors opened the day with a 3-1 win over Mesa thanks to a strong third set in which they outscored the Thunderbirds 25-16.
Larryn Joseph-Rodrigues led the Matadors in kills in the first set with 12 while Lilou Henry-Souquet-Bressand had 11 and Natalia Valencia-Gamboa finished the match with 10.
Arizona Western took the first set 25-23 before falling 25-22 in the second. After winning the third set 25-15, the Matadors closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Andrea Krgovic and Nehir Erimez combined for 44 assists with Erimez leading the team with 24 and Krgovic adding 20. Three Matadors finished in double-figures in digs with Rana Yamada leading the team with 21.
The Matadors came out quick in the second match of the day, setting the tone early with a 25-16 win over Chandler-Gilbert on their way to a 3-0 victory.
Henry-Souquet-Bressand led the Matadors with 13 kills while Yamada led the team in digs with 16. Krgovic finished the match as the team leader in assists with 23.
The Matadors outlasted the Coyotes 27-25 in the second set and put Chander-Gilbert away 25-20 in the final set to take the match.
