WICHITA, Kan. – The Arizona Western Matadors Women's Soccer team (19-0-1) outlasted Salt Lake (18-3-1) 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a scoreless 110 minutes on Thursday afternoon at Scheels Stryker Sports Complex to earn its spot in the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship Final for the first time in program history.
Salt Lake provided some pressure early, taking their lone shot on goal just five minutes into the game that Matadors' keeper Iyan Hernandez saved with a slide to the right.
Arizona Western recorded four shots on goal, tallying their first shot on goal just a minute later. The Matadors recorded two more in the first half and had a shot on goal with just two seconds remaining, which was saved by the Salt Lake keeper.
Hernandez stopped the first shot of the shootout with a dive to the left before Kei Yoneda stepped up and knocked home the Matadors' first attempt from the spot. After Salt Lake slotted home its first penalty, Naho Yamamura gave the Matadors their second. Salt Lake evened the shootout on a make and a save on Arizona Western's third attempt. Salt Lake missed its next two shots thanks to a save from Hernandez on the first and a ball that struck the bar on the second to give the Matadors the win in penalties.
The Matadors will take on Daytona State in the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship Final on Saturday, November 23, at 12:00 pm Arizona time in Wichita, Kan., at Scheels Stryker Sports Complex. The final between the Matadors and Falcons will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
