Baseball fights back to earn split with Eastern Arizona

YUMA, AZ - The Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (11-3, 2-2) earned a doubleheader split with Eastern Arizona (5-3, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 5-3 before coming from behind to win 9-6 in game two in Thatcher.

Robert Miranda collected a pair of hits and went 2-for-4 with a double while Nathan Houston drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 in a 5-2 loss in game one.

The Matadors scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a Houston single before Eastern Arizona scored all five runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 5-2 lead.

Alex Flores worked a scoreless inning in relief for the Matadors.

Just like in game one, the Matadors opened the scoring in game two, scoring three runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Eastern Arizona rattled off five consecutive runs over the next eight innings to take a 5-3 lead into the ninth.

The Matadors offense came to life, scoring six runs, two of which scored on a Sergio DeCello two-run homer as the Matadors took a 9-5 lead and would fend off a late rally from the Gila Monsters, allowing just one run in the bottom half.

Miranda went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in while DeCello finished the game 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and Taehyung Kim also went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Yoni Castro set a season-high with eight strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision while Mac Robertson earned the win in relief, striking out three batters and allowing one run in 1.1 innings.

The Matadors return home on Tuesday, February 20, hosting Central Arizona in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
