Cougar Softball Sweeps CGCC to Conclude Homestand

The South Mountain Community College softball team (9-11, 7-11 ACCAC) won both games against Chandler-Gilbert Community College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 7. The Cougars closed out an eight-game homestand with 6-2 and 4-2 victories over the Coyotes.

In game one, CGCC pushed a run across in the first to take an early lead. SMCC tied the game in the third and then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. After the Coyotes tied the game in their half of the sixth, the Cougars responded with four runs to seal the victory.

Jaymie Moore finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Julia Ruble hit her sixth home run of the season, and Christian Smith, Vanessa Gutierrez and Destiny Apodaca each picked up an RBI. Ali Ashner recorded her team-leading 11th double of the season to go with two RBIs.

Gutierrez (5-7) threw a complete game to earn the win in the circle. She allowed two hits, and one earned run to go with one strikeout.

The second game saw the Cougars strike for four runs in the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Chandler-Gilbert Community College scored runs in the fifth and the seventh, but SMCC held on to sweep the Coyotes.

Smith (2-3) earned the win for SMCC, scattering six hits and one earned run over 6.2 innings of work. Gutierrez recorded her first save of the season, getting the final out of the game.

Alexa Key had the only multi-hit game for South Mountain Community College, finishing 2 for 2 at the plate.

Six other Cougars had hits in the win, including Smith, who helped her cause with her first home run of the season. Ashner recorded her team-leading fourth triple while Ruble added her seventh double of the season.

Elisabeth Raby dropped down a pair of sacrifice bunts, and Apodaca added her 14th stolen base of the season to tie her for the team lead with Adrianaly Morales.
