Baseball scores 28 runs in doubleheader sweep of Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (14-4, 5-3) swept an ACCAC doubleheader with Yavapai (7-9, 1-5) on Saturday afternoon in Prescott, Ariz., taking game one 5-4 before winning game two 23-9 in seven innings.

Sergio DeCello went 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run homer, driving in three of the Matadors' five runs to help the Matadors come from behind to win the opener 5-4.

Yavapai scored a run in the second and fourth innings to open a 2-1 lead before the Matadors scored four runs in the sixth inning on a pair of two-run homers from Robert Miranda and DeCello to put the Matadors in front 4-2. After Arizona Western added a run in the seventh, Yavapai scored a pair of runs in the seventh but left the tying run at second base as the Matadors held on for the 5-4 win.

Miranda finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs batted in while Matadors' starter Ismael Cordoba allowed just one earned run over six innings of work, striking out three in the win. Mac Robertson worked one inning to earn the save.

Marcus Graham drove in five runs while both Miranda and Eli Watson drove in four runs as the Matadors scored a season-high 23 runs in a 23-9 win in game two.

Arizona Western scored nine runs in the first inning and bumped the lead to 13-0 with four more in the second inning. The Matadors scored in all but one inning, scoring four runs in each the fourth and fifth innings. Yavapai scored all eight of their runs in the final three innings.

Miranda finished the game 2-for-2 with a double and two walks and Eli Watson doubled twice, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Graham finished a perfect 4-for-4, homering and driving in a team-high five runs in the win.

Robertson earned the win on the mound after picking up a save in game one, tossing four innings and allowing one run while striking out three.

The Matadors return home on Tuesday, February 27, hosting Pima at Walt Kammann Baseball Field in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
