Arizona Western Softball earns doubleheader split with Phoenix

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (25-15, 17-7) split a doubleheader with Phoenix (28-7, 21-3) on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 6-1 before falling 1-0 in game two

Valerie Joaquin went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while GiGi Garcia and Kaity McLaughlin also picked up two hits each in the win.

After Phoenix opened the scoring in the first inning before the Lady Matadors tied the score in the bottom half. Joaquin opened the frame with a walk and then came home to score on a Kaity McLaughlin triple to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lady Matadors batted 10 times in the fifth inning, scoring five runs to take the 6-1 lead. Arizona Western jumped in front of the Bears with a pair of runs on a GiGi Garcia double before Madison Morgan capped off the big inning with a three-run triple to push the lead to 6-1.

Jessie Garcia allowed just one run over seven innings of work to earn the win in the circle.

Lili Vigil German tossed five shutout innings in a no-decision while Jayleen Espinoza, Madison Morgan, and MacKenzie Barney all singled in the loss.

Phoenix scored the lone run of the game in the sixth inning after an error put a run in scoring position.

The Lady Matadors put the tying run and the go-ahead run on the corners with two outs in the sixth inning but were unable to push across a run.

Arizona Western heads to Prescott on Tuesday, April 16, for an ACCAC doubleheader with the Yavapai Roughriders beginning at 11:00 am.
